Podiatry is mainly concerned with the biomechanics of the foot and leg i.e. how they move and how this in turn relates to a wide range of painful conditions which can affect the foot, ankles, lower legs and even the knees, hips and lower back.  Podiatrists are professionals who specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of pains which are related to poor foot function.  The early detection of poor foot biomechanics can protect the person from potential problems later in life.  To this end the podiatrists at Apex Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic see a large number of children.

The Podiatry Team consists of three highly skilled and qualified podiatrists headed by Martin McGeough.who has over 16 years of experience in this specialised field.  Since 1990 he has held several podiatry lecturing posts at Queen's University, Belfast, at the University of Ulster and currently at Trinity College, Dublin.

The podiatrists skilfully examine the way your feet and legs move by using a state of the art computerised gait (walking) analysis lab which consists of high speed video analysis, a treadmill and in shoe pressure plate analysis.  The addition of this high tech machinery helps the podiatrists to give you a more accurate diagnosis of your presenting problem and more accurate ways of treating it.  Treatment may incorporate the prescription of custom-made foot orthoses and foot wear advice.

Orthoses are specialist foot supports which may be used to improve or correct poor foot function as part of the overall approach to abolishing pain.  The podiatrists can often uncover the cause of longer term injuries that stem from abnormal foot biomechanics.
